The
Dream Never Died
He first hit the stage at age 6, and by age 16,
had already done radio and live concerts and on one occasion appeared in front
of an audience estimated to be 10,000. At 17, he was introduced to live television
and was doing the night clubs. He joined the Light Operatic Society performing
live in "Pirates of Penzance","Chu Chin Chow" and "Ali
Baba and the Forty Thieves".
At this stage, the dream was to attend
the Juillard's School of Music, New York, ultimately becoming an accomplished
singer and recording artist. This profound dream did not materialize but the overpowering
dream of singing and performing lived on.
Drawing upon the influence
of musical greats like Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstein, Johnny Mathis, Paul Anka
and Frankie Laine, Don is a master interpreter of the songs of yesteryear. With
a repertoire of over 250 songs spanning the decades between 1920 and 1970, Don
can entertain any mature audience. Whatever the occasion, his popular songs, inspirational
tunes or Christmas items are sure to bring audiences to their feet.
Don's
career was set in motion after performances on Trinidadian radio and television,
clubs, hotels and private parties. His success peaked as he performed with world-renowned
artistes: The Hugo Blanco Band and the Dennis de Souza Quartet sharing the stage
with the likes of The Mighty Sparrow, The Mighty Duke etc.
He was married
at age 22 to the one who is still his beautiful life's partner. Soon, they had
their first child - a boy but he had made a difficult decision to move to New
York alone to look for that golden opportunity in 1970.
Don
appeared at New York City locales such as the Bamboo Club, the African Room and
the Bill Hodges Lounge and, after almost two frustrating years, he finally secured
the opportunity to record and perform but made another difficult decision to return home to his family and five month old daughter - who he would be seeing for the first time. Because
of the priority of family life, he could not take advantage of the opportunity.
He continued living the family life and doing the clubs, and within a few years
received a contract to become the English singer in the Hugo Blanco Band, who
subsequently went on a world tour. Again he could not take the opportunity.
Since moving to Toronto, Don's musical talents have been appreciated at a
number of community events supporting the Hospital for Sick Kids and the Canadian
Cancer Society.
Now, at age 65 Don has decided on a joint venture with EDDIE BULLEN of THUNDERDOME
SOUNDS to make that dream come true. Don appreciates working with Eddie
who garnered a JUNO award in 1985 and was also nominated in 1995 and 2001.
Many
thanks to his wife, two kids and their spouses and his parents for their support
in making this dream a reality.
Here is a selection of songs he had always
wanted to do on his first recording, done in his unique style. Hope you enjoy
listening to them as much as he enjoyed doing them and he strongly urges YOU to
NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAM.
Rekindling his musical career with his varied
experience and impressive repertoire, he is guaranteed to make your next event
or private function a very pleasant and memorable one. |
